With nearly 50 years of experience working with designers in the residential, hospitality, contract, aviation and transportation markets around the world, we provide top-of-the-line leathers that are as unique as each of our customers.

Our trained professionals are experts at understanding the many nuances of leather. We manage the entire process with the highest of quality standards (Townsend Leather has an AS9100 Certification) from start to finish: from your initial consultation, determining the best approach to your project, right through dyeing and finishing, to final delivery of your leather.

At Townsend Leather, we are the manufacturer. We are craftsmen and artisans of leather, not just distributors or marketers. For us, this is a life passion and a family-owned business, not just another job. Red Kucel founded our company in 1969, and his family, now in its third generation of leadership, continues to run the business. Our leather is produced in our state-of-the-art facility located in upstate New York, about 50 miles northwest of Albany.

We can match the hue, value and chroma of any paint chip, carpet sample, fabric sample or Pantone number, or any other color reference. We can create custom embossing for any pattern, design, logo or idea. We can custom-craft the exact leather you are looking for. Handcrafted.

We are the manufacturer producing the highest quality leather. High-quality leather begins with acquiring the best raw materials. At Townsend, we accept only the finest hides and skins from partner tanneries around the world to ensure we are providing our customers with the best yield and value available.

We use water-based aniline dyes to custom-color the hides, meeting our customers’ exact specifications. We have the largest collection of embossing patterns for leather under one roof in the U.S., with well over 700 embossing plates and more than 140 calendar rolls. Through the use of specialized techniques by our highly skilled leather craftspeople, many textures can be embossed on whole cowhides without showing overlap lines. This maximizes cutting yield and greatly minimizes the need for excess seams during upholstery.

We offer options for unique finish applications, including hand rubs and hand-tipping applications that highlight embossed patterns (hand-tipping) or the natural grain of the leather (hand-rubbing) as well as embossing, buffing, antiquing, waxing and waterproofing. These hands-on capabilities allow us to truly raise our leather to a new level of craftsmanship and artwork.

Every order of Townsend Leather is thoroughly tested in our own laboratory to ensure that it meets or exceeds industry performance standards. In addition to routine quality tests of the highest possible standards and exceeding AS9100 Certification requirements, we are also able to perform many other tests to meet a job’s specifications, including all flameproofing standards.

Because we are the manufacturer, controlling all production processes and retaining the exact formulas and retainer cuttings of each order, we can control all aspects, crafting the perfect leather for every order.
